FROGGY NIGHTLIGHT

The purpose of this project was to create a fully rendered lamp fixture with a specific persona in mind, and present the supplementary assets and process by which it was created.

design process

To begin the persona-building process, what first came to mind was a group that may not have the purchasing power of most consumers, but nevertheless deserves to have purposeful, well-designed products catered towards their needs: children.

The standard flat LED, wall plug-in night light is a classic way to ease children's minds dealing with nighttime fears, but has three major issues that I aimed to tackle:

a.) if the child leaves the room (such as to go to the restroom), the light doesn't follow them.

b.) the outlet(s) in a child's room may not be close enough to a problem area, such as behind a door, near a closet, or under their bed.

c.) the light alone may not be enough to soothe them, so they still may have issues falling asleep.

Taking these three issues into account, I conducted visual research and became fascinated with the idea of a two-piece night light, with a glowing detachable sphere serving as the emitter. Sketches were created in order to meet this concept in a variety of styles that were narrowed down to a friendly frog design to solve the issue of soothing a child, as well as realistically fit in a small child's hand.

Next, the frog nightlight was dimensioned and modeled in Solidworks. After a simple color treatment, the 3D model was brought into Keyshot and rendered using sleek, soft plastic materials and natural wood buttons to make it child-safe and have a friendly, whimsical ambience about the final product.
